Family Selection Committee Member

Committee Purpose & Scope:

The purpose of the Family Selection Committee is to assist potential Partner Families through the application process and to select families for homes.

The Family Selection Committee is responsible for assessing each potential family's need for shelter, ability to pay, and willingness to partner with Habitat for Humanity.

Committee members will possess knowledge of the application intake, financial review and the home visit processes. The Family Selection Committee is charged by the board to select future Habitat homeowners.

Time Commitment Required:

  • Attend relevant meetings, such as training, policy reviews, and family selection meetings no more than once per month

  • Meet with applicants during the application process no more than once per week

Volunteer Responsibilites:

  • Attend Family Selection Committee Meetings

  • Make fair, legal, and compassionate selection decisions that honor families dreams, history and realities

  • Act as an ambassador in the community for Habitat for Humanity

  • Select, with the rest of the committee, applicant families for Habitat homes

  • Honor confidentiality of all information received

  • Have a desire to help prospective Habitat families be successful

  • Have the ability to sift through information provided and work effectively with other committee members to make collaborative decisions

  • Understand and support the mission of FHFH

Volunteer Qualifications:

Professional or personal experience in one or more of the following areas is also especially helpful:

  • Positive interpersonal communication skills

  • Eagerness to work with low-income families

  • Experience with human services and/or affordable housing

  • Knowledge or experience with the mortgage lending process or real estate

  • Organizational and committee management skills

  • Personal finance background and interest
