MISSION

Our mission: to build strength, stability, self-reliance - and shelter

Flatirons Habitat for Humanity partners with the people in our community - and across the world - to help them build or improve a place they can call home. Habitat homeowners build their own homes alongside volunteers and pay an affordable mortgage. With the support of our volunteers, partners, and donors, Habitat homeowners achieve the strength, stability, and independence they need to build better lives for themselves and for their families.

HISTORY

Our history: serving the community for over 30 years

Habitat for Humanity was established in 1976 by Millard and Linda Fuller with the goal of providing adequate shelter to those in need. Today, Habitat for Humanity has served more than 68 million people in more than 70 countries around the world, and completes the construction or repair of a home every four minutes.

Flatirons Habitat was chartered as a Habitat for Humanity International affiliate in 1993. Our first homeowners, the Portillos, moved into their Habitat home on May 21, 1994. Since then, we have served over 100 families in the Boulder-Broomfield area by building, repairing, and rehabilitating homes.

Flatirons Habitat for Humanity has an open-door policy:  who believe everyone needs a decent, affordable place to live are welcome to help with our work, regardless of race, religion, age, gender, political views or any of the other distinctions that too often divide people.

As a matter of policy, Habitat for Humanity International and its affiliated organizations do not proselytize. This means Habitat will not offer assistance on the expressed or implied condition that people must either adhere to or convert to a particular faith, or listen and respond to messaging designed to induce conversion to a particular faith.

OUR HOMEOWNERS

Everyone deserves a safe, stable place to call home.

No matter where we come from or what challenges we face, we all deserve the opportunity to build a better life—for ourselves and for future generations.

At Flatirons Habitat for Humanity, we believe in the power of people and possibility. We know that families in our community have incredible strength, resilience, and potential. Sometimes, all they need is a hand-up—a chance to take that next step toward stability and independence.

There is no single story of a Habitat family. Our homeowners come from all walks of life—educators, healthcare workers, artists, office staff, tradespeople, caregivers, and more. What they share is a dream of a brighter future and the determination to make it real.

Habitat homebuyers are selected based on three key criteria:

  1. A demonstrated need for safe, affordable housing

  2. A willingness to partner with us—putting in sweat equity and working alongside volunteers

  3. The ability to repay an affordable mortgage

When a household partners with Flatirons Habitat, they’re not just building a house—they’re building a future. With support from our team and our community, they gain access to tools and resources like financial education and homeownership training. And they commit to the journey, knowing that every hour of work brings them closer to a stronger, more stable foundation.

Homeownership is hard work—but it’s also a powerful investment in hope, stability, and opportunity.

Together, we're creating a world where every family
has the chance to thrive.

OUR HOMES

  • At Flatirons Habitat for Humanity, we believe everyone deserves a safe, healthy place to call home. For over 30 years, we've been building high-quality, energy-efficient homes that are thoughtfully designed, permanently affordable, and built to last — thanks to the dedication of our volunteers, partners, and future homeowners.

  • Our homes typically feature three bedrooms and 1,100 square feet of comfortable, functional space. We build with care, using trusted brands like Whirlpool for energy-efficient appliances, Hunter Douglas for stylish window treatments, and quality carpeting throughout.

Each Flatirons Habitat home is designated permanently affordable by covenant — ensuring that families today and tomorrow can achieve the dream of homeownership.

  • We partner with professional architects to ensure our homes blend beautifully into the neighborhoods where we build. Every home meets or exceeds local construction standards, and we work with licensed professionals for foundations, electrical, plumbing, and HVAC systems.

Our materials are top-notch — from DOW insulation to energy-saving blue board — and every home is brought to life by the heart and hands of our dedicated volunteers. On average, it takes about nine months to complete a home.

  • Sustainability is at the heart of what we do. Many of our homes are solar-ready, and when grants or partner support allow, solar panels are installed during construction. We’re proud to build with the future in mind and pursue high standards through programs like ENERGYSTAR, LEED for Homes, and Indoor airPLUS.

  • At Flatirons Habitat, we offer a hand up, not a handout. Our homeowners purchase their homes through an affordable mortgage and commit to paying property taxes, insurance, and HOA fees. Homeowner Associations help keep communities beautiful and well-maintained.

We also support our families with tools for long-term success — offering workshops and resources on everything from home maintenance to financial planning.

Together, we’re building more than homes —
we’re building brighter futures.
