From time to time, Flatirons Habitat for Humanity endorses ballot initiatives that closely align with our mission. The City and County of Broomfield’s Ballot Initiative 1A, Check-In for Housing, is one of those initiatives.

Initiative 1A would increase Broomfield’s lodging tax from 1.5% to 6%, generating an estimated $3 million annually to create, preserve, and expand access to affordable housing. Even with the increase, Broomfield’s lodging tax rate would remain below those of neighboring communities.

The lodging tax is paid by guests staying at Broomfield hotels and other short-term lodging establishments. It would not increase residents’ property or sales tax rates. For a typical hotel stay, the measure would add approximately $6.60 per room per night.

The funding would support housing for individuals and families earning at or below 60% of area median income, approximately $84,000 annually for a family of four. The Broomfield Housing Alliance, Broomfield’s local housing authority, would oversee the funds. BHA is a transparent, trusted organization with a strong record of leveraging public resources, turning each local dollar it receives into approximately $8 in housing impact.

We all know affordable housing provides a foundation for health, opportunity, and financial stability. Although Flatirons Habitat focuses on homeownership, we recognize that Broomfield needs a range of housing options for people at different income levels and stages of life.

Initiative 1A would establish a reliable, locally controlled source of funding to meet that need. Flatirons Habitat is proud to endorse Check-In for Housing.
